With a huge sigh of relief, I can finally announce that Iron Sky The Coming Race is now finished!
In normal films and circumstances, you really celebrate at the premiere – and we will do that, for sure (get your tickets to the party here!) – but this is no normal film, and these haven’t been the normal circumstances. So the fact that we have finished this movie, is indeed a point of celebration to us.
As those who have been following our journey know, the production was halted for one and a half year, and nearly got buried before being restarted after rigorous financial negotiations. The producers – led by Tero Kaukomaa – worked overtime for years trying to get the film off the ground, and then re-did it all again after things got halted, fighting off all kind of nuisances like lawsuits and stuff like that, which normally don’t really stop the wheels from turning, but being a relatively small production, they can really cause damage.
And now, finally, the film has been completed. Pixomondo has delivered the last VFX shots just few days ago, the final music was delivered by Laibach and Tuomas Kantelinen on the last minute, the picture color grading and mixing finished at Rotor, and the Dolby mastering got finished just today. Only thing left to do is the DCP, and then – wait for the world premiere in Finland on 16th of January!
But a huge effort like this comes with a shadow. One of the key persons who had poured his soul to the film, is not here to see it finished. We lost our VFX supervisor at Pixomondo, mr. Thilo Ewers just two weeks shy of their final delivery. It’s really hard to describe the shock and sadness this brings to us, and while his amazing dinosaurs and spaceships live on the screen, he won’t be there to witness them. Our deepest condolences go to Thilo’s family and work community.
So much has happened during these six years of production – which started already in 2013, with the earliest discussions taking place even before that, in 2012. Ups and downs, highs and lows. All of those stories will live on, and we have a book coming up which puts them all out, so stay tuned. But for now – as said, it’s our great pleasure to let you know that the film is finally done, and we are really, really proud of it.
To celebrate finishing the movie, we release now the official keyart for Iron Sky The Coming Race, produced by the virtuous artist Jeremy Saunders, with VFX elements by Pixomondo and photography by Tomi Tuuliranta. Enjoy!
But a post like this wouldn’t be complete without a huge thanks to our fans, who supported us through multiple crowdfunding campaigns, and showing up on the set and playing as extras in the film’s multiple crowd scenes, and also being killed, eaten or trampled by our dinosaurs. So, thank you our trustworthy, patient fans – finally, the long wait will be over soon!
