Director Timo Vuorensola begins a crowdfunding campaign to add an additional scene to his film Iron Sky The Coming Race, currently in post-production. In the scene the reptilian shape-shifter Margaret Thatcher falls from her dinosaur-drawn chariot and is crushed to death when a sun rolls over her. The scene was planned and shot during the filming, but was cut later so the budgeted VFX money could be used for other scenes. However, Director Vuorensola did not want to give up on the scene and decided to turn to the audience.
“We have hundreds of shots with big effects in the film and we have to think very hard where to spend the budget in order to make the best possible film, sometimes that means cutting scenes that are good, but possibly not as essential to the plot,” Vuorensola explains. “Some cuts however hurt more than others and I did not want to leave poor Margaret on the cutting room floor. Because the budget is locked the only way to do it is to look for money elsewhere – so I’ve decided to ask our fans for help.”
The campaign, which launched October 12th, surpassed its original goal of $25,000 the same day it went live. It offers hard-core fans the chance to buy original props and costumes from the film. The campaign will continue until November 12th in order to raise more funds to bring back a few more VFX shots that have been cut.
“No one has done this before”, Vuorensola says. “Even now, with the film in post-production I can pitch my idea to our fans and thanks to social media and crowdfunding they can decide if that idea will become reality.”
In addition to props and costumes the crowdfunding campaign offers tickets to Fan Premieres, special screenings held all over the world, including several Gala Premieres, where the filmmakers themselves will be present.
Iron Sky The Coming Race is a sci-fi adventure comedy with a 17 million euro budget. It stars Lara Rossi, Udo Kier and Tom Green. The film will come to the theaters in fall of 2017.
